The 2016 Michelin Bib Gourmands: Affordable Gourmet Restaurants

Recently, 2016 Michelin Bib Gourmands were released by the iconic company for the San Francisco Area. In contrast to the well-known Michelin Stars, Bib Gourmands are high quality restaurants that can be dined at with most wallets. This is defined as $40 before tax and gratuity for a couple courses plus a glass of wine or dessert. Another difference between the two Michelin-driven lists is that there are more Bib Gourmands than stars in a given year.

Gracious newcomers include Diavola, Farmhouse Kitchen Thai, Farmstead, Izakaya Rintaro, La Perla, Millennium, Orchard City Kitchen, Poggio, Ramen Gaijin, Trestle, Wonderful, and Zola. Not surprisingly, the majority of this list comes from restaurants that have opened recently. Like everything, there are a few exceptions, namely Diavola and Poggio, that snagged a Bib Gourmand after lots of work. The newcomers are joined by two restaurants that have received Bib Gourmands for several years in a row: Bar Tartine and Rich Table.

Though, there is a finite amount of Gourmands that can go around, which means that some restaurants that were on the list in previous years are no longer apparent. There are 16 restaurants that disappeared from the list—from Flour + Water to The Girl & The Fig. But the omission could end up being a blessing in disguise, as Michelin Stars and Michelin Bib Gourmands are given separately.

Favorites like Flour + Water and Kin Khao could be the happy recipients of one, two, or three Michelin Stars. Or none. Time will tell.

In the end, lists like these can be frustrating because it’s unknown what the thinking behind the Michelin inspectors was. The only thing that isn’t mysterious is the absence of restaurants that have closed—and that’s super obvious. While restaurants may take this list to heart, as an eater you don’t have to. Use the list to find something new or remind you why you like eating at a particular place.
